1. Persephone's Choir

The dogs are eating all the mulberry leaves
And yet they seem unsatisfied
I'm feeling overwhelmed and wild in the spring
Entered by everything
The mourning dove on the wing
And the yellow jacket's sting

But it's all right, it's all Persephone's choir
It's all right, green grows the fire

I'm wide awake and dawn's invading the room
Surrounded by the looming light
The grasses waving in a verdant parade
Sharpening up their blades
The pomegranate grenades
And the soldier ant brigades

But it's all right, it's all Persephone's choir
It's all right, green grows the fire

Come on now, put on alfalfa wings
And drink the dew with me

All I ever wanted was all the life I could bear
Persephone's everywhere
The cicada's crimson stare
The peril in the air

It's all right, it's all Persephone's choir . . .

2. Where Is the Chair?

When we got home from school today
The furniture was gone
It seemed like any other day this morning
We passed the vacant hallway
Then ran from room to room
Everything had vanished with no warning

Where is the chair?
What happened to my bed?
Why'd she take the lamps?
Was it something that I said?
Daddy's Lazee Boy was sitting in the corner
In a dust-bunny cloud in the den

We opened up the kitchen drawers
They're empty, no surprise
Just three knives, three forks, three dented spoons
We wandered to the third floor
And found the old TV
And settled in to watch some old cartoons

Where is the chair?
What happened to my bed?
She took my baby sister
She could have taken me instead
Daddy's Lazee Boy was sitting in the middle
Of a dust-bunny bash in the den

In the yellow bathroom where she used to comb her hair
All her pretty perfumed things had fled
I looked into the mirror but there was no one there
I wonder if it's like this when you're dead

When Daddy came home after work
We offered him some chips
We found them in a cupboard way up high
We thought he would explain
But when my brother asked him why
He lay down on the floor and closed his eyes

Where is the chair?
What happened to my bed?
Why'd she take the clocks?
Was it something that I said?
Where is the chair?
What happened to my bed?
She took my baby sister
She could have taken me instead
Daddy's Lazee Boy is sitting in the middle
Of a dust-bunny bash in the den

3. Everybody's All Grown Up

Blinking fireflies in the sycamore trees
Playing hide and seek till the twilight slips away
Dreamy windows dance with their flickering ghosts:
Zenith, Magnavox, and RCA

Everybody's found their way
Everybody's over yesterday
Everybody's all grown up
Everybody fills their loving cup
With bitterness, you can't pretend
You never knew what loving meant
Happiness passed you by
You can't pretend you don't know why
Cause everybody's all grown up

Slipping down the banks of the creek where it goes
Rushing round the bend till the morning slips away
Dreamy memories dance with their flickering ghosts
Now we're all grown up, it'll be OK

Everybody's found their way...

4. No Love Lost

We held each other in the crowd
I tried to warn you but they yelled so loud
I couldn't make myself clear
Here comes another sneak attack
They don't care about you, oh they're back in action
Trying hard to be brave

There is no love lost
I'll be there when I hear you calling
No love lost
Everybody got to keep from falling down
Falling down

You never asked for my advice
Who in the world is worth this sacrifice
I wish it was all a dream
Dreaming of angels singing songs
I knew you were wrong but still I sang along
It took my breath away

There is no love lost . . .

I can't deny
This is more than I bargained for
But love won't die
Uninvited, never requited

There is no love lost . . .

5. Touch & Go

I keep your name off my lips
Though it doesn't keep you off of my mind
I give your face just a quick
Look, I never know what I'll find
How long will it take
Till I forget the night we met
Who said Goodbye
Who said Not yet

Oh oh oh, divided we grow
And then we wonder why
Oh oh oh, now I know
You and I touch & go

I drink for two every night
All I do is end up doubling you
One you is kind and contrite
The other one is kidding me too
How long will it take
Till I forget the song we wrote
We began with accord
And ended with a note

Oh oh oh, united we flow
And then we petrify
Oh oh oh, now I know
You and I touch & go

I lie awake running over you and me in my head

It's no accident, I turn the whole story to trash
But we're back from the dead, we walk and we talk,
And I say what I said and I say it all again
Till I finally crash

I drink for two, sip for sip
I get up again to coffee for one
I keep your name off my lips
Though it's on the tip of my tongue

How long will it take
Till someone perfect I just met
Says, Were you in love?
And I say, I forget

Oh oh oh, touch & go
No matter how we try
Oh no, there's no Velcro
You and I touch & go

6. We're All Part Pit (A Requiem for Molly)

Fast and fierce and full of beans
She sent some grown men running
But only those who misperceived
A toothy grin as cunning

Girls on the corner, jump back, jump back
OH NO IT'S A PIT! (we're all part pit)
Boys in the hood, jump back, jump back
WHOA MAN IT'S A PIT! (we're all part pit)

Snappy, snazzy, she's the queen
Of all the parks and playgrounds
Scattering schnauzers when she made the scene
And racing with the greyhounds

Possum in the field, jump back, jump back
Molly's on a rip
Granny with the cane, fall back, fall back
OH YES IT'S A PIT (we're all part pit)

From a bicycle chain to a 16-year reign
Part paranoia but she never complained
Whatever was doing, she was doing it too
Happy just to be with you
Plumber in the house, jump back, jump back
Get down, Molly – sit!

Assassins lurked round all her bends

Right wise if over-zealous
Some foes turned into friends
Just don't make Molly jealous

Girls on the corner, jump back, jump back
OH NO IT'S A PIT!
Boys in the hood, jump back, jump back
OH MAN THAT'S A PIT! (we're all part pit)

7. Mute

You disappeared a week ago
Nobody knew where you'd gone
Yesterday morning
I went out and found you asleep on the lawn
Oil stains on your pleather jacket
Scotch on your breath – did I scare you to death
When I slapped your face and whispered, Welcome home

Mute, baby, you're mute
Where's the farrago of lies and evasions
Mute, baby, you're mute
What is the special occasion
Has the cat got your lungs
You stare at your thumbs and you're mute
Mute, mute

The rumors are flying now
Everyone knows you've been bad
They say you went back to her
Or else that you didn't but sure wish you had
The whole world's got a story, baby
So what's wrong with you, it doesn't have to be true
You know I won't believe you anyway

Mute, baby, you're mute
Where's the farrago of lies and evasions
Mute, baby, you're mute
Suiting the words to this special occasion
Well you can chime in or choke on it
I'm leaving anyway
In less than a heartbeat, in the time that it takes to say
Mute, mute, mute

8. You Didn't Need That Heart/Curtain Came Down

Who's that in the forest
A ruckus in the chorus
Of larks
Who's that in the office
Racking up the profits
And perks
It's you, chasing a buck
Or two, day after day
You take whatever you like
And throw the rest away

Ah, you didn't need that heart
You didn't need that soul
You better bury that funny, bloody feeling
In a deep dark hole
And you and your game
Are not the same
At all

Everyone's a cricket
Chirping in the thicket
Of time
You reduce the hours
To guns and bows and arrows
And lies
It's true, you are what you eat
It's you, the meat and the fat
No deal is ever complete
Without a lot of that

You didn't need that heart . .

Hey, it was a one-man, one-woman show
Hey, you wrote him out in Buffalo
Hey, and then you took to the stage
When drama was all the rage

Yeah, he said your life was out of control
Yeah, so you threw yourself into the role
Yeah, with all the charm of a cheese
And the brains of a Bichon Frise

You wore a smile till the curtain came down
A wave of applause but you didn't drown
You kept on smiling till the curtain came down
Fit to be tied and bound

Hey, I stayed up late to read the reviews
Yeah, plenty there that I could use
Hey, but when I called the hotel
The clerk said She's gone to hell

You wore a smile till the curtain came down
Hiding the stain on your elegant gown
You kept on smiling till that curtain came down
Then they took off your crown
(You didn't need that heart)
You wore a smile till the curtain came down
(You didn't need that soul)
A wave of applause, you heard not a sound
You kept on smiling till the curtain came down
Then here comes the frown
The curtain is coming down

9. Wonderground

I'm rubbing the lamp, I don't mean to shout
But the wishes you gave me, they're not working out
I'm over the top, I'm under the bar
My favorite baby is made out of tar
I feel so warm and then the wheel of dharma turns
The thrill is gone, there's nothing left to burn

Well you can shrink it, you can ink it
You can divvy it up
But you can't get to Wonderground
You can eat it, you can cheat it
You can pee in a cup
But you can't get to Wonderground that way
If you just close your eyes
You don't matter and I don't mind
We can crawl in with the fallen, with the lost and found
And we'll all go to Wonderground

I've been to the mine, I'm wearing the jewels
Been out of my head, in love with a fool
They try to be brash, they ask for the moon
They want to unravel the Luna cocoon
Time and tide are a place to hide
When I just can't say no
Hold the tabby and let that tiger go

Well you can brand it, you can ban it
You can stand on your head
But you can't get to Wonderground
You can hedge it, you can wedge it,
You can measure its edges
But you can't get to Wonderground that way
If you just open your eyes
I'm all ready and you're all right
We can strengthen, we can weaken with a sucking sound
And we'll all go to Wonderground

The logical animal wants to laugh
The language of love'll be heard on her behalf

I'm rubbing the lamp, I don't mean to bitch
But the wishes you gave me, they're making me rich
I'd trade this mess for a treasure chest
Of old question marks:
How's your griffin? and Who retunes the dark?

Well you can riot, you can diet
You can hang with your crew
But you can't get to Wonderground
You can chew it, overdo it
You can make love to it
But you can't get to Wonderground that way
You can chase it, you can ace it
You can take it court
But you can't get to Wonderground
You can scan it in a sonnet, you can cha-cha on it
But you can't get to Wonderground that way
If you just blink your eyes
You might miss it but you won't mind
We can crawl in with the fallen,
With the lost and found
And we'll all go to Wonderground

(The ocelots'll oscillate a lot)

10. MMIV

MMIV, we need life support in this gut-wrenching century
You're bleeding out fast and the devil's in the bed with me

Another orphan born, another burden
So forlorn and uninsured and mum's the word
Cause haven't you heard, you can thank the bank
It's loud and clear, better beware or she'll disappear like Virginia Dare

Lead em out through the back door
Weed em down to the hard core
Sleeping under cardboard

MMIV, we need life support in this heart-rending century
You're bleeding out fast and the devil's in the bed with me

The planet's overrun with new fanatics
Hatching plans, attacking noncombatants, man
It's evildoers outdoing each other everywhere you turn
Them, us, it never works, and we never learn
Turn the gyms into burn wards
Turn the fields into boneyards
Falling on our own sword

MMIV...

The cows are mad and who can blame em
Bush-men got guns and who can tame em
If we 86 43 then MMV might be a bit better
But the boys in the back room got that shredder

Can't delay till a better time
Wait around till the weather's fine
Stat! We got a flatline

MMIV, we need life support and a double shot of liberty
You're bleeding out fast and the devil's in the bed with me
MMIV, we need life support in this high-tension century
You're bleeding out fast and Jesus got mad at me

11. One More Song

I'd give a thousand nights
For just one day to call my own
I've been arraigned and read my rights
Whatever I've done, I must have done it alone

Let your conscience be your bullwhip
Lashing you down into creation's fire
Got a stay of execution
If I can prove I'm no gun for hire

One more song
Before we go to bed
One more story before you
Chop off my head
One more song
Before you kill the light
One more chance to keep me
Breathing through the night
I'm writing one more song for you

All those wasted years
Dragging behind me like a terrible tale
Nine lives and ten careers
Now I'm here in this upscale jail
With my rhyming dictionary
My Beatle records and my old guitar
And a deadline, gotta hurry
The King is coming and I haven't started

One more song . . .

Well, no regrets and no apologies
What should I be sorry for
No angel's flying down here with the key
Cause I'm the one who locked the door

The next song is the best song
I'm going to heaven if I die tonight
But the best song doesn't last long
The melody's fading, I'm already writing

One more song . . .
